Five More Arrested in Connection with Killing of Police Officers During Gen Z Protest in Maharajgunj
KATHMANDU, Oct 26
Police have apprehended five additional suspects accused of involvement in the killing of two police personnel during the September 9 Gen Z protests in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Milan Raya and police constable Uttam Thapa were fatally attacked by protesters outside the Maharajgunj Police Circle, leading to their deaths at the scene.
According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the newly arrested suspects are Som Gurung (21) of Gorkha, Rajiv Gurung (21) of Tanahun, and Yunik Shrestha (21). Two minors — Sumit Titung (17) of Sarlahi and Deepak Magar (16) of Ramechhap — have also been detained. All five are currently being held at the District Police Range in Bhadrakali for further investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the arrested individuals were directly involved in the fatal assault on the officers.
Earlier, four others — Yubaraj Kyapchaki, Sonam Tamang (alias Budhilal Thing), Hom Prasad Poudel, and Tikaram BK — were already under judicial custody pending trial for their alleged roles in the killings. Police investigations have indicated that Kyapchaki and Thing were involved in the attack that killed Constable Thapa, while Poudel and BK were responsible for the death of ASI Raya.
Authorities confirmed that Titung and Magar were detained on October 17, while the other three suspects were taken into custody on October 20.
Police said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident.
