Rain and Snowfall to Continue Until Friday; Weather Likely to Improve from Saturday

KATHMANDU, Oct 30

Most parts of Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley, have experienced rainfall over the past two days, with unseasonal heavy rain and early snowfall this Kartik bringing both relief and challenges, delighting some farmers but raising concerns about floods and landslides in several regions.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the current weather disturbance is caused by the combined influence of westerly winds and Cyclone “Montha”.

Senior meteorologist Barun Paudel said the cyclone’s effect will intensify overnight, leading to heavier rainfall across the country.

“The rain is occurring as forecasted and will increase tonight,” Paudel said, adding that the eastern regions, from Koshi Province to eastern Lumbini, are likely to see the heaviest rainfall.

The department forecasts that the rain and snow will continue through Friday, with gradual improvement starting Saturday morning as the weather system moves eastward.

“The weather in Kathmandu will begin to clear from Saturday morning,” Paudel noted.

The department further reported that the system entering from Madhesh Province is likely to bring moderate to heavy rain in several areas, along with snowfall in high hills and mountainous regions.

Moderate rainfall is expected in many parts of Koshi Province, while Gandaki and Lumbini provinces could experience rain and snowfall in higher altitudes. Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces may see light rain, with moderate snowfall expected in elevated areas nationwide.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, avoid trekking in mountainous areas, and stay alert for possible floods and landslides as adverse weather conditions persist.
