Nipah Virus Outbreak in India Triggers Airport Screenings in Asia

A deadly Nipah virus outbreak in India’s West Bengal state has raised concern across Asia. In response, several countries have started health screenings at airports to prevent the virus from spreading.

Thailand has begun screening passengers at three airports that receive flights from West Bengal. Nepal has also started checking arrivals at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at land border points with India.

Indian health officials said two Nipah virus cases have been confirmed since December, both involving healthcare workers. Authorities traced and tested 196 people who came into contact with the patients, and all tested negative.

The World Health Organization has listed the Nipah virus among its top ten priority diseases. The virus can spread from animals to humans and has a high death rate, ranging from 40% to 75%, with no vaccine or specific treatment available.
