Nepal Telecom Launches New ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ Control Feature for Mobile Users

Kathmandu: In a major relief for mobile users, Nepal Telecom has introduced a new ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ (PAYG) control feature that allows both prepaid and postpaid customers to decide whether their main balance should be used after a data package is exhausted.

The move comes in response to long-standing customer complaints about automatic balance deductions once subscribed data packs expired. Under the previous system, many users unknowingly lost money from their main balance as mobile data continued running in the background after their package had ended.

With the new feature, customers will now receive an alert notification when 90 percent of their data pack has been consumed. Once the package is fully exhausted, users can choose whether to continue internet usage through PAYG charges or stop data consumption until a new package is activated.

This customer-control option is expected to significantly improve transparency and user trust, especially among users who frequently complained about unexpected balance loss due to background app activity and delayed usage alerts.

According to Nepal Telecom officials, the system is currently in its testing and phased rollout stage, and full implementation is expected soon. The service reform is part of a broader initiative led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to improve telecom service delivery and strengthen consumer protection.

Industry observers say the feature will particularly benefit users in Nepal who rely on smaller recharge amounts and short-term data packs, as it gives them direct control over how and when their remaining balance is used.

The new PAYG control system marks another step in Nepal Telecom’s ongoing digital service reforms, aimed at creating a more user-friendly, transparent, and complaint-free mobile experience.
