KP Sharma Oli Says He Was “Illegally Detained for 13 Days,” Alleges Government Vendetta
KP Sharma Oli has claimed that he was kept in illegal detention for 13 days, accusing the current government of pursuing a politically motivated vendetta against him.
Speaking after his release on personal recognizance bail, Oli said the detention was part of an attempt to target opposition leaders under the guise of investigation. He maintained that the case filed against him lacked legal grounds and was driven by revenge rather than justice.
Oli had been arrested in connection with the investigation into the September 2025 Gen-Z protest crackdown, during which dozens of people were killed and many others were injured. Authorities have been probing the alleged role of senior leaders, including former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, in the handling of the protests.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ordered that Oli and Lekhak be released after the expiry of their latest remand period on April 9. The court had dismissed the habeas corpus petition but directed the government to release them once the legally approved detention term ended.
Oli said his detention reflected a dangerous trend of misusing state power to settle political scores, warning that such actions could undermine democratic norms and the rule of law.
The case continues to remain at the center of Nepal’s fast-changing political landscape following the recent government transition.
