Justice for the Voiceless: The Brutal Killing of a Stray Dog in Samakhusi Sparks Outrage
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Samakhusi, Kathmandu, on Saturday evening when a stray dog was brutally beaten to death near Supreme College. Around 6 PM, a group of youths attacked the sleeping dog using iron rods and stones, leading to its immediate death.
The horrific act was captured on video by animal rights activist Irfan Khan, who, along with five others, has filed a police complaint at the Gongabu New Buspark Police Station against four unidentified individuals. The footage shows three to four young men mercilessly assaulting the helpless animal as it lay resting in a scene that has shaken many across social media.
According to locals, the dog had reportedly bitten one of the attackers earlier, which led the group to take revenge by killing it. However, animal activists argue that no act of harm or aggression justifies such extreme cruelty toward a living being.
Police officer Bhes Bahadur Sunar confirmed that the case has been officially registered, and an investigation is underway based on the available footage. Despite this, progress has been slow, as locals have been reluctant to identify the suspects. One woman reportedly recognized two of the men’s houses, but police have yet to locate them.
Under Nepal’s Animal Welfare Law, anyone found guilty of cruelty or killing animals can face up to three months in jail or a fine of up to Rs. 5,000. However, activists argue that such mild penalties fail to discourage violence and that stronger laws and enforcement are needed to protect animals from abuse.
Animal lovers and welfare organizations have since taken to social media, demanding “Justice for the Samakhusi Dog”, calling for strict action and long-term awareness campaigns about animal rights and compassion.
This incident is not just a story about one stray; it reflects a larger issue of insensitivity and lack of accountability in how we treat the voiceless around us. Every street dog we see is a life that feels pain, fear, and love and it’s our shared responsibility to ensure that they live with dignity and safety.
It’s time we remember: humanity is measured not by how we treat the powerful, but by how we protect the powerless. 🕊️
