Government Spends Only 12.12% of Fiscal Year 2082/083 Budget in First Half
Kathmandu. The government of Nepal has utilized just 12.12 percent of its total allocated budget in the first half of the fiscal year 2082/083. According to official figures, NPR 690.78 billion of the total NPR 1,964.11 billion budget has been spent so far. This indicates a slower pace of budget execution compared to previous fiscal years.
Officials state that several sectors, including infrastructure, health, and education, have seen delays in fund utilization due to administrative and procedural challenges. While some progress has been made in ongoing projects, the overall expenditure remains below expectations. Analysts point out that timely spending is essential for meeting development goals and delivering public services effectively.
Government representatives have explained that certain allocations are contingent on project approvals, tender processes, and inter ministerial coordination. The delays, they say, do not necessarily reflect a lack of commitment but rather a cautious approach to ensure transparency and proper implementation of programs.
Economists emphasize that low budget utilization in the first half of the fiscal year can affect development outcomes, as many projects are scheduled to accelerate in the latter half. They also note that improving planning, simplifying administrative procedures, and streamlining fund release mechanisms could help achieve better expenditure targets.
The Ministry of Finance has assured that measures are being taken to speed up fund utilization, particularly for sectors critical to public welfare. Officials highlighted that mid-year reviews and performance monitoring are being strengthened to prevent bottlenecks and ensure efficient budget execution.
Public observers have expressed the importance of not just allocating funds but ensuring they reach intended projects and communities. Efficient budget spending is seen as a key factor in sustaining economic growth, infrastructure development, and social programs. Authorities aim to address delays proactively to avoid impacts on scheduled projects for the remainder of the fiscal year.
As Nepal moves into the second half of the fiscal year, attention is expected to shift toward accelerating expenditure while maintaining accountability and transparency. Proper utilization of allocated funds will be critical in supporting development objectives, improving service delivery, and reinforcing public confidence in government operations.
