First Successful Ascent of Chhuama Mountain in Mustang
MUSTANG, Nov 5:
An eight-member mountaineering team, including three climbers from South Korea, has successfully completed the first-ever ascent of Chhuama Mountain in Upper Mustang. The 6,213-meter peak was summited on November 2, according to the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), Lomanthang Office.
The mountain, located in Lomanthang Rural Municipality-4, is accessed from Namdo village through the Chhuama Base Camp at an altitude of 5,480 meters. The successful climbers included South Korean mountaineers Dongjin, Namyong, and Hnichul, accompanied by five Nepali guides.
The team reached the summit after a 10-hour climb from base camp, beginning their ascent at 2 a.m. on November 2. They later returned safely to Lomanthang after scaling the third of the three Chhuama peaks — marking a milestone in the region’s mountaineering history.
According to Umesh Poudel, Chief of ACAP Lomanthang, the first successful climb of Chhuama Himal will play a significant role in promoting adventure tourism and mountaineering activities in Upper Mustang.
