Egg Prices Rise Again in Nepal: Wholesale Rate Hits Rs 500 Per Crate
Kathmandu, October 27
Egg prices in Nepal have once again increased, with the wholesale rate reaching Rs 500 per crate, according to the Nepal Layer Poultry Farmers’ Association. The new price adjustment will take effect from Monday, following a decision made in response to reduced production and growing consumer demand.
According to Association Chairperson Binod Pokharel, the wholesale price of large-sized eggs has now been set at Rs 500 per crate, while medium-sized eggs are priced at Rs 450 per crate. This marks a Rs 50 increase per crate compared to previous rates. The new pricing has been based on the Chitwan market, a key hub for poultry farming in Nepal.
Despite the price hike, Pokharel assured that the impact on consumers will be minimal. “There will only be a change of about 50 to 70 paisa per egg in the retail market, so the impact won’t be major,” he explained.
Currently, the retail price for consumers stands around Rs 22 per egg, depending on size and location. However, as wholesalers adjust their selling prices, retailers are also expected to raise their rates slightly, leading to a moderate increase in consumer prices.
The Nepal Layer Poultry Farmers’ Association attributes the current rise to declining egg production caused by seasonal changes and higher feed costs, coupled with a surge in consumption during the festival season.
Current Rates of Eggs in Wholesale:
- Wholesale price of large eggs: Rs 500 per crate
- Wholesale price of medium eggs: Rs 450 per crate
- Retail price: Around Rs 22 per egg
- Increase: Rs 50 per crate
- Reason: Reduced production and higher demand
With egg prices fluctuating frequently, consumers and businesses alike are keeping a close eye on future market trends, especially as the festival season continues to boost demand across the country.
