Cristiano Ronaldo Says “Soon” Means Within One or Two Years Before Retirement

Cristiano Ronaldo has cleared the air about his recent statement hinting at retirement, saying that “soon” means within the next one or two years.

The 40-year-old Portuguese forward, who has scored more than 950 career goals for club and country, made his professional debut with Sporting CP in 2002. Over two decades later, he remains one of football’s greatest names — but says he is nearing the end of his playing career.

Speaking via video call at a Saudi-hosted global summit on tourism and investment, Ronaldo joked, “Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking,” before clarifying that he feels great physically but knows the end is coming.

“I’m really enjoying the moment right now. I feel very good, I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp. But let’s be honest — what I mean by soon is probably one or two years,” he said.

Final World Cup on the Horizon

With Portugal close to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo confirmed that the tournament in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

“Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old,” said Ronaldo, who already holds the record as international football’s top scorer with 143 goals.
“I’ve given everything to football — 25 years in the game, many records at clubs and for my country. I’m proud, and now I just want to enjoy the moment.”

Legacy and Family

Ronaldo extended his contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia until 2027, but his focus is shifting toward family life. He also reflected on his legacy, saying he knows he will be remembered as one of the best players in football history.

He was also asked about Cristiano Jr., who is following in his footsteps and currently plays for Portugal’s Under-16 team.

“As a father, I wish my son to be better than me, but I won’t pressure him,” Ronaldo said. “He should be happy and free — whether he plays football or chooses another path. This is a new generation that thinks and lives differently. I’ll always be his support.”

Ronaldo’s words mark a significant moment in his legendary career, signaling that the world may see the final chapter of CR7 within the next two years.
