Chile Declares ‘State of Catastrophe’ as Wildfires Kill at Least 18
Chile has declared a state of catastrophe in two regions after deadly wildfires killed at least 18 people. President Gabriel Boric announced the emergency as fires continue to spread in the Ñuble and Biobío regions, south of the capital Santiago.
Officials said more than 50,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas. Many families were forced to leave their homes as strong winds and dry weather helped the fires grow quickly. The president warned that the death toll could rise as rescue work continues.
The most dangerous fire has burned through dry forests near the coastal city of Concepción. Disaster officials said around 250 homes have been destroyed, leaving many people without shelter.
Emergency teams, firefighters, and the military are working together to control the fires and help affected communities. Authorities have urged people to follow safety instructions and avoid high-risk areas as the situation remains serious.
