Central Zoo Houses 1,273 Animals Across 112 Species; Oldest Elephant is 76

The Central Zoo in Lalitpur currently shelters a total of 1,273 animals representing 112 different species. The zoo is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation and serves as one of Nepal’s key institutions for wildlife conservation, education, and public awareness.

Officials stated that the zoo hosts a wide variety of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. These species come from different ecological regions of Nepal as well as from other parts of the world, allowing visitors to learn about global biodiversity in a single location.

Among the animals currently living in the zoo, the oldest is an elephant estimated to be around 76 years old. The elephant has been part of the zoo’s collection for decades and remains one of the most recognized animals among visitors.
