Iranian Women’s Football Player Rejects Asylum Offer, Chooses to Return to Iran
One member of the Iran women’s national football team has decided to return home after previously receiving an offer of asylum in Australia following the team’s exit from the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The player reportedly reconsidered her earlier decision and chose to go back to Iran, despite the opportunity to remain abroad.
Officials confirmed that several members of the Iranian women’s football delegation were offered humanitarian visas by Australian authorities after concerns were raised about their safety if they returned home. The offer came after the team drew international attention during the tournament when some players declined to sing the national anthem before a match.
While multiple team members accepted the asylum offer, the player who initially agreed later contacted Iranian officials and requested to return to her country. Authorities verified that the decision was made voluntarily after discussions with officials and family members.
Reports indicate that at least seven members of the Iranian women’s football delegation sought asylum in Australia following the tournament, citing fears of possible repercussions after the national anthem incident during the competition.
The situation has drawn global attention to the challenges faced by some athletes competing internationally under tense political circumstances. Despite the controversy, most members of the Iranian squad eventually departed Australia and continued their journey home after the team’s elimination from the tournament.
