Nagdhunga Sisnekhola Tunnel Operation Delayed by Three Months Due to Landslide and Operator Selection

The operation of the Nagdhunga Sisnekhola Tunnel Road has been delayed by an additional three months, according to project officials. The tunnel, which is expected to ease traffic congestion on the busy Kathmandu Naubise section, will not become fully operational within the previously announced timeline.

Officials involved in the project said the main reason for the delay is a landslide that occurred near the western portal of the tunnel. The landslide has affected surrounding structures and requires further technical work to ensure long-term safety before regular traffic can be allowed to pass through the tunnel.

In addition to the landslide issue, the process of selecting an operating company has also contributed to the delay. Authorities explained that finalizing a suitable operator is essential for managing tunnel operations, maintenance, and safety systems once the road opens to the public.

The Nagdhunga Sisnekhola Tunnel is considered a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Kathmandu Valley and western Nepal. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow on one of the country’s busiest highway sections.

Project officials stated that repair and stabilization work at the western portal is ongoing. Engineers are closely monitoring the site to prevent further geological risks, especially during changing weather conditions. Only after the area is fully secured will the project move toward final operational testing.

Despite the delay, authorities maintain that the tunnel structure itself remains safe and intact. The additional time is being used to ensure that all technical, environmental, and operational requirements are met before opening the tunnel to vehicles.

Commuters who regularly use the Nagdhunga route have been waiting for the tunnel to ease daily traffic pressure. While the delay may cause short term inconvenience, officials say safety and proper management remain the top priority.

With the revised timeline now in place, the project team aims to complete remaining works and resolve administrative processes within the next three months. Further updates are expected as progress continues.
