Collision with Greek Coastguard Boat Leaves 15 Migrants Dead off Chios
At least 15 migrants died after a speedboat collided with a Greek coastguard vessel near Chios, with dozens rescued and search operations still ongoing.
At least 15 migrants have lost their lives after a speedboat carrying them collided with a Greek coastguard vessel off the coast of the island of Chios late on Tuesday, Greek authorities confirmed. The tragic incident occurred in the Chios Strait, near the coastal village of Vrontados, an area often used by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings.
According to the Greek coastguard, the speedboat was attempting risky manoeuvres at high speed when the collision took place. Officials said a pursuit was under way at the time, as the vessel was suspected of illegally transporting migrants. Following the impact, the speedboat capsized and quickly sank, throwing its passengers into the sea.
Rescue teams managed to save 24 people from the water, several of whom were seriously injured and taken for medical treatment. Authorities fear the death toll could rise, as some passengers are still reported missing. Search and rescue operations continued through Wednesday, with boats and divers deployed across the area.
Survivors told local media that most of those onboard were Afghan nationals, while at least one person identified themselves as Moroccan. Greek television reports suggest the migrants were attempting to reach Europe through one of the region’s most perilous maritime routes.
The Greek coastguard confirmed the collision in a brief statement, stressing that conditions at sea were dangerous and that the incident unfolded rapidly. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the crash, including the actions of both vessels during the pursuit.
This latest tragedy once again highlights the extreme risks faced by migrants who rely on overcrowded and unsafe boats to cross into Europe. Despite repeated warnings, such journeys continue, often driven by conflict, poverty, and a lack of legal migration pathways.
Local authorities on Chios have expressed concern over the recurring loss of life in surrounding waters, calling for stronger international cooperation to address human smuggling networks and improve migrant safety.
As search efforts continue, families of those onboard wait anxiously for news, while officials work to piece together the final moments before the deadly collision.
