Messi Makes History at 38: Reaches 400 Assists as Inter Miami Storms Into Semifinals
Fort Lauderdale, Nov 9
Lionel Messi added another monumental chapter to his legendary career on Saturday, becoming the first active footballer to record 400 career assists as Inter Miami thrashed Nashville SC 4-0 in the MLS Cup Playoffs at Chase Stadium.
The 38-year-old maestro struck twice in the first half before setting up Tadeo Allende for Miami’s fourth goal, securing the club’s spot in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Messi now stands just four assists shy of Ferenc Puskás’ all-time record and remains the only active player to achieve the 400-assist milestone. His postseason form has been remarkable, with five goals and two assists in just three playoff matches, complementing his 29 goals and 19 assists from the regular season.
Inter Miami will face FC Cincinnati in the semifinals, beginning November 22.
Messi’s overall statistics continue to redefine football greatness. He has netted approximately 894 goals in 1,133 appearances, amassing over 1,290 combined goals and assists — the highest total in professional football history. He also holds the record for the most official assists, already surpassing Puskás’ 404.
His trophy cabinet is unparalleled:
- A record eight Ballon d’Or titles
- Six European Golden Shoes
- Five IFFHS Best Playmaker awards
- Four UEFA Champions League titles
- Ten La Liga crowns with FC Barcelona
- FIFA World Cup 2022
- Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024
Despite his age, Messi continues to dominate both as a scorer and playmaker, showcasing extraordinary vision, precision, and consistency. His influence at Inter Miami has transformed the club’s trajectory, and as the playoffs progress, fans worldwide will be watching to see whether he can close in on or even surpass Puskás’ historic assist record.
Lionel Messi’s career continues to prove one thing: true greatness doesn’t fade it evolves.
