Government Assigns Recalled Ambassadors from 11 Countries to Foreign Ministry
KATHMANDU, Nov 4
The Government of Nepal has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have ambassadors recalled from 11 countries report to the Ministry for reassignment.
The move follows the Supreme Court’s interim order, issued on Sunday, suspending the government’s earlier decision to recall ambassadors appointed on political grounds.
According to Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri, the Ministry received a formal letter from the government on Monday instructing all 11 ambassadors to return and report for duty at the Ministry.
Earlier, a Cabinet meeting on October 16 had decided to recall the ambassadors by November 6, citing the end of their political tenure. However, a writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court, arguing that the decision was unlawful and politically motivated.
Following a preliminary hearing, the Court issued an interim order directing the government not to implement the recall decision until further notice.
With this directive, the ambassadors will now remain attached to the Foreign Ministry, pending the Court’s final verdict on the matter.
