Nepal Imports Eight Lakh Smartphones Worth Rs 13.62 Billion in Just Three Months

Nepal imported eight lakh (800,860) smartphones worth Rs 13.62 billion during the first three months of the ongoing fiscal year 2082/83, according to the latest data from the Department of Customs.
From this import, the government collected Rs 2.54 billion in customs revenue, highlighting the continued growth of Nepal’s smartphone market.
Festive Season Boosts Smartphone Imports
The highest number of smartphones were imported during Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September), aligning with the Dashain–Tihar festival season, a peak period for gadget sales in Nepal.
- Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August): 198,333 smartphones worth Rs 3.41 billion imported
- Bhadra: 310,360 units worth Rs 5.45 billion imported
- Asoj (mid-September to mid-October): 296,167 units worth Rs 4.75 billion imported
The government earned the highest customs revenue in Bhadra, collecting Rs 1 billion, followed by Rs 886.3 million in Asoj and Rs 637.9 million in Shrawan.
Comparison with Last Fiscal Year
During the same three-month period last fiscal year, Nepal imported 655,631 smartphones worth Rs 9.83 billion, generating Rs 1.83 billion in customs revenue.
last year’s imports:
- Shrawan: 225,163 units worth Rs 3.46 billion
- Bhadra: 229,795 units worth Rs 3.24 billion
- Asoj: 267,673 units worth Rs 3.12 billion
Customs revenue during this period totaled Rs 646.2 million, Rs 604.5 million, and Rs 582.6 million, respectively.
China and India Dominate Nepal’s Smartphone Market
The majority of smartphones entering Nepal originate from China and India, two key manufacturing and export hubs for mobile devices. The steady rise in imports indicates increasing smartphone penetration and growing consumer demand driven by festive offers, digital adoption, and competitive pricing.
