35 Nepalis Deported from the US, Including a Student Visa Holder

Kathmandu, November 20

A group of 35 Nepali nationals deported from the United States arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

According to SSP Krishna Pangeni of the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau, most of the returnees had entered the US through illegal channels. One of them, however, had initially traveled on a student visa.

The student was deported after authorities found he had failed to renew his college enrollment and was working in violation of his visa terms. Another person, who had traveled on a visit visa, was expelled after being arrested for unauthorized employment.

The remaining 33 individuals had used illegal routes to reach the US, paying human traffickers up to Rs 8 million each. Despite entering through multiple countries and living in the US for up to two years, they were eventually detained and deported.

Police said most of the deportees were from Rukum and Dang. However, none of them have filed complaints against the traffickers.

Following Donald Trump’s election as US president, the administration adopted a stricter policy on undocumented immigrants, leading to increased deportations. Since his term began, more than 200 Nepalis have been sent back from the US.
